Trust Your Inner Bullshit Detector
The Beauty of Truth (Even When It’s Not Pretty)
Don’t fake your gratitude. Telling your truth in your gratitude is vital for getting the benefit of the practice. Don’t say what you think you should be grateful for. Don’t say what you wish you were grateful for. Use your voice. And speak your truth.
Write your gratitude using your voice, your own unique perspective. As you are in this moment. Own it. It is real. It is beautiful. It is valuable. My gratitude isn’t inspiring because it is written perfectly. It is inspiring because it is real and you can tell.
Don’t get caught up in how many things you write. Even if you can just think of one thing that you are grateful for, that is enough. It is real. It is beautiful. It is valuable.
Some people ask how they can tell that what they are grateful for is really true. No one can answer that for you. But you can trust yourself. You know when you are bullshitting and when you are being real. If you write your gratitude and you think it might be false then trust that intuition. Just remember that sometimes the truth isn’t pretty and in that way sometimes our true gratitude may not be pretty. It’s more important for it to be true than to look good.
I always say that gratitude is beautiful. But that doesn’t mean that what we are grateful for is pretty or even pleasurable. It’s beautiful because it is real. It’s beautiful because it comes from the heart. It’s beautiful because it is a moment of truth highlighted with the lens of appreciation.
To express oneself honestly, not lying to oneself; that, my friend, is very hard to do.
~Bruce Lee
