A Recipe for Feeling Alive

Acceptance and Appreciation Throughout

What Makes You Feel Alive?

It is such an individual thing. What makes you feel alive and what makes me feel alive are probably vastly different. But as I hold my animal companion through her last days I have been thinking a lot about how often it is the simplest things that make me feel alive. Like noticing the warmth of the sun on my skin. Like making eye contact with someone who I care about. So I decided to think about my recipe for feeling alive.

Nature
Notice an everyday element of nature.
Savor it.
Appreciate it.

Your own humanness
Notice the good and the bad. Notice the need to categorize as good and bad.
Accept yourself.
Appreciate yourself.

Breathe
Notice your breath as it is right now.
Thank it for feeding your cells with life.

Someone you care about
Think about them.
See them. If they are in front of you make eye contact with them.
Accept them.
Appreciate them.
Tell them.

Your time
Notice what you do.
Notice how it is connected to your values.
Appreciate what you do.

It was interesting to see how much noticing and accepting and appreciating filled my list. I guess for me feeling alive is about noticing, accepting and appreciating. Well today anyways. I’m sure this is an ever-changing recipe. I’m excited to see what it looks like in a month, a year, a decade.

What does your recipe for feeling alive look like today?

quote

You start dying slowly if you do not travel, if you do not read, If you do not listen to the sounds of life, If you do not appreciate yourself.
~Pablo Neruda
