Belonging

“Don’t walk through the world looking for evidence that you don’t belong.”

Finding Belonging

Brené Brown gives this powerful advice that emerged from her research on belonging. She says that we shouldn't walk through the world looking for evidence that we don't belong because we will find what we are looking for. She instead says that the belonging is within us. In our heart and spirit. It is a given. We do belong. Each and every one of us. We are whole. We belong. We are enough.

This idea that we find what we are looking for is something very familiar to us gratituders. We know that when we look for something to be grateful for we will find it. And if we look for something to complain about we will find it. We can use the practice we are so familiar with to improve our sense of belonging by deciding that we belong and looking for evidence of that belonging. But we don't want to look externally for that evidence.

The important thing to remember is that we belong to ourselves. That we already have belonging. Just like in gratitude. We aren't seeking gratitude outside of ourselves. We aren't seeking others to validate our gratitude. We start from knowing that we are capable of feeling grateful. Then we go into the world knowing that and having that proven to be true again and again with each moment that we find something to be grateful for.

quoteWhen you get to a place where you understand that love and belonging, your worthiness, is a birthright and not something you have to earn, anything is possible.
~Brené Brown

In what ways are you grateful to know you belong, that you are enough just as you are today flaws and all?
