Honoring our loved ones who are no longer here.
Grieving with Gratitude
I have seen that grief has been emerging in our community. I feel for you and am so inspired by your vulnerable and honest gratitude sharing. I decided to create this month’s gratitude ritual with grief in mind and I was so very grateful to have read this article, Grief Isn’t Something to Get Over, which helped inspire me.
A Gratitude Ritual
- Find a space where you can have some uninterrupted alone time.
- Gather together about 10 objects from nature. You might choose rose petals, stones, leaves or maybe something that isn’t from nature but that you love like some beads or silverware, etc.
- Sit in a comfortable place with the 10 objects in a pile in front of you.
- Think of your loved one who you are grieving. If you would like gather a photo or another object that helps you remember them.
- One by one, hold each object and think of a memory you have of your loved one. Then place the object in a circle in front of you.
- Once you are done, look at the circle you have formed and whisper aloud, “Thank you.”
- Then one by one pick up each object and hold it to your heart before putting it back in a pile.
- Put your hand on your heart and whisper: I accept myself. I am grateful for who I am.
- Sit as long as you would like.
- When you are ready, return the objects back to nature by scattering them outside, washing them with care or placing them in a sacred place in your home.
Always count your blessings, even if you have to count them through your tears.
