If You Want To See Something Ugly

This Basquiat quote is just so damn true.

Seeing It All

Do you want to see the ugliness in the world? Do you want to see the beauty in the world? It isn't really a choice. We have the capacity for both. But we just have to remember that if we want to see something beautiful we can. Even amidst the ugly. Even within the ugly.

So let's practice this. Wherever you are look around and find something ugly. Let it have the platform of your attention. Don't be afraid of the ugliness of it all. Now look within yourself and see something ugly. Don't be afraid of this shadow. Notice it. Notice how easy or hard, comfortable or uncomfortable it is to find ugliness around you and within you.

Now decide to find beauty. Wherever you are look around and find beauty. Let your attention linger on the beauty. Delight in it. Now look within yourself and see something beautiful. Don't be afraid of this beauty. Take it all in. Notice it. Notice how you feel.

What did it feel like to allow the ugliness? What did it feel like to allow the beauty?

Did noticing the ugliness take away from the beauty? Did noticing the beauty take away from the ugliness?

Is there room in the world for ugliness and beauty?

Is there room in your perspective for ugliness and beauty?

How does what you see change when you decide to look for something beautiful?

What are you grateful for about this exercise?

quoteIf you wanna see something ugly you’ve never too far to go. But if you wanna find something beautiful, well, that’s not too hard either.
