Get Out of Your Perspective Rut

I have always hated that.

Another Day Another Opportunity

Yesterday I was at Target and making small talk with the cashier. We were celebrating that he was getting off work in 15 minutes. Then he started talking about how much he hates Mondays and how he has hated them his entire life. He really lost me there. I’ve never understood hating a day of the week. And like everything else in life if we are looking for things to go wrong or to complain about, we will find them.

This is also why I don’t follow Mercury being in and out of retrograde, why I try not to let other people’s experience of a person determine how I see them, and why I don’t read a daily horoscope. Because once I decide something like, “I have trouble communicating with people when Mercury is in retrograde.” I tend to let that thought rule my day. I start to gather facts that support the theory. Because I am looking for failures of communication, I find them. Then I have one more thing to complain about.

What was nice about this interaction with the cashier is that when I left I started to think about things I have decided and have had a long-term commitment to. Like I hate mouth noises. I hate mornings. I am bad with names. I hate getting rain on my glasses. Each one of these examples is in no way absolute. There are times that I absolutely love mornings. Just a few days ago I didn’t mind the rain on my glasses. And now I remember more people’s names once I stopped saying that I am bad with names and instead say that I have to work harder to remember names. And although I never really love mouth noises sometimes it bothers me much more than other times when someone is chewing with their mouth full.

I love the idea of a gratitude practice renewing itself daily. The sun rising in the east bringing us all new possibilities and opportunities. Something we were grateful for yesterday we may not feel grateful for today. Something that irritated us yesterday might fill our hearts with gratitude today. Be open and curious about all you encounter. And who knows what unexpected gratitude you may find.

quoteAs each day comes to us refreshed and anew, so does my gratitude renew itself daily. The breaking of the sun over the horizon is my grateful heart dawning upon a blessed world.

What is something you are not usually grateful for but you are open to the possibility?
