Is Your Gratitude Practice Building Your Resiliency?

And through my gratitude I now know my worth.

What Do You Do When Things Get Hard?

Do you try to numb the pain?

Do you distract yourself?

Do you ignore it?

Do you practice gratitude?

Do you fall back into some old negative patterns?

Do you exercise?

Do you feel sorry for yourself?

Do you reach out to people who are a support to you?

Do you blame yourself and/or others?

Do you ruminate on all the what-could-have-beens?

Do you nourish your body?

Do you meditate or do anything else that brings you fully into the present moment?

Do you deprive or punish yourself?

Do you reflect on your needs and desires?

Do you reflect on the needs of the world?

Do you seek professional help?

Do you feel all your feelings?

Do you plan, take action and/or rest?

For me the answer is yes. I have done all of the above. But what stands out the most to me as I reflect on a little over two weeks of grieving is how healthy I am. I realize that when things got hard I doubled down on all of my healthy practices and even reintroduced a few that I have not been doing for awhile. I have been practicing gratitude (of course), exercising, journaling, spending time with my friends and family, diffusing essential oils, resting, drinking a lot of water, eating healthy foods and even baked a pie to give myself some healthy comfort food.

After all this time of practicing gratitude I now know my worth. I am grateful for my body and mind and spirit. I value myself and know that I am good and worthy of my gentleness, love and nurturing. Worthy of being in a healthy place both in my environment and inside me.

In the past when I was grieving a loss I would be in those places of numbing as a knee-jerk reaction and stay there for a while. But this time was different. I guess my gratitude practice has taught me the ultimate coping mechanism. What’s great about that is that gratitude forces us to not wallow in how hard, sad, terrible everything is. It reorients us to find the good. And there is always good. And finding the good keeps us going.
