Coaching Yourself Through Establishing a New Habit
I co-facilitated a workshop on Saturday on mindful meditation and gratitude. As I listened to the woman talk about meditation I found myself being hard on myself about the fact that I have fallen out of my meditation practice. At the worst I called myself lazy and unfocused. There was also a lot of “shoulds”. Not from the presenter but in my own thoughts.
Then I remembered something.
That doesn’t work.
What we need in times of change is to focus on our strengths and past successes and how this change fits into our values. I know all of this but sometimes I forget. So, I decided to share with you my favorite coaching questions and my favorite tool for tracking progress.

I am guessing that a lot of you will use it for your gratitude practice. I am grateful to have that habit down but I am going to use it for my meditation practice. But really it can be used for any behavior change. Good luck! And remember to focus on your hopes for the future.
Let me know if you have any questions or need any guidance.
We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.

Think about the last time you wrote down and shared what you were grateful for. In what ways was it a fulfilling experience?
LEARNING: I finally did it! I have been wanting to share visual gratitude through photos and I finally did it over the weekend. It was a lovely change. There was a lot more gratitude I experienced but it isn’t always easy to take photos in the moment. That was nice too, because I ended up keeping a lot of gratitude just for myself.
FORGOTTEN GRATITUDE: Last week I was also grateful for deviled eggs … Having the skills, supplies and desire to make a gift for my sister’s birthday … Seeing a baby lizard running across the path.
