His Words Stopped Me in My Tracks

All We Take for Granted

I overslept this morning. I still have not adapted to the time change and my mornings have been challenging. I woke up at 8:30am. Jumped in the shower. Quickly threw on clothes. Got into my car and raced across town arriving with a minute to spare to my meeting at 9:30am. I sat down at the table and going through my mind was: I didn’t get coffee. I didn’t eat breakfast. I didn’t bring my correct notebook. My hair is wet. I am so unprofessional.

Then, my colleague who is from Santo Domingo Pueblo started our meeting with a prayer and with setting intentions and focus on helping the people of Santo Domingo. Then he said, “I have been blessed since I woke up this morning.” He looked right at me and continued, “we all are.”

In that moment my heart opened up. I was finally present, so full of appreciation for his centering words. Now, as I look back I see so clearly. In that hour, the first of my day, I was also blessed. I awoke in time. I felt good, healthy and well. I had access to a warm shower and clean clothes. My hair is easy to care for and doesn’t require any blow-drying, straightening or other work. I was able to swiftly move from one room to the next and find everything I needed. I was focused and determined. I remembered to bring paper and a pen. My car started. There were no traffic jams. I was able to drive to the meeting without incident. I needed gas but had plenty to get me there. I was able to find parking. I arrived in time to greet my colleagues. I sat down and was able to get focused before the meeting began.

Until he mentioned his own blessings mine were not even a distant thought. I am so grateful to experience this and to be able to pass it along to you as well. Every single hour of our days there is a whole list of things for which to be grateful.

I hope you can stay focused on them and receive beautiful reminders to refocus when you need it most.

In what ways have you been blessed since you awoke this morning?

LEARNING: Twice recently I experienced such beautiful and overwhelming gratitude early in the day and tried to hold on to the memory so I could share it later. Luckily I remembered. But this is reminding me that in the past it has been really useful to write down my gratitude throughout the day. It is nice to see how different my gratitude is at different times of day.

FORGOTTEN GRATITUDE: Last week I was also grateful for selling my creative items … Finishing a book that I wasn’t sure I would finish in time … Taking vital first steps to get going on an overwhelming project.
