The Most Beautiful Nudge

Finding Gratitude for Inertia

I love the concept of a nudge. The idea is simple: Inertia is real. If we accept and embrace that then we can use it to our advantage. An effective nudge makes the “best” choice the easiest choice. A classic health example: If you often overeat, buy smaller plates. Another example is when grocery stores hang signs in the parking lot that says, “don’t forget your bags”. The key to a nudge is autonomy and choice. You can still eat more if you want by having seconds but the smaller plate makes that less likely because of inertia.

I have given this a lot of thought in relation to gratitude. How can we make gratitude the easiest choice? Here are my ideas:

  • Hang a gratitude reminder in your bathroom, kitchen or in your car.
  • Follow gratitude groups and individuals on social media and every time you see a gratitude post think about and share your gratitude.
  • Put a gratitude reminder on your key chain.
  • Keep a gratitude pebble in your pocket and every time you feel it think about what you are grateful for.
  • Set a reminder in your phone calendar to practice gratitude.
  • Use this email as a nudge to think about and express your gratitude.
  • Keep your gratitude journal/board/jar in a place where you will see it.
  • Light a gratitude candle and let its flicker nudge you towards gratitude while you eat dinner.
  • Change your password into a reminder to find gratitude or another positive intention.
  • Add the question, “What are you grateful for?” to your email signature.

In the spirit of positive nudges, I have an offer for you.

The best nudge I could have offered would have been to automatically enroll you in the November Nudge but that seemed a little too pushy … So it is up to you … To participate, sign up to receive a daily email (or for less nudgey options log in to the website or visit the Facebook group each day).

In case you missed it, yesterday’s question was: What are you grateful you learned from someone who wasn’t being very nice?

What are you grateful to be gently nudged into doing?

LEARNING: I loved the gratitude for commitments that came out of last week’s issue. So often my commitments can hang like a weight that feels anchoring in a way that is uncomfortable. But declaring gratitude for my commitments was so energizing, liberating and affirming! I want to definitely explore that more.

FORGOTTEN GRATITUDE: Last week I was also grateful for a delayed fall, leaves hanging on just a bit longer … My gratitude board writing not being washed away in the rain … Feeling a draw, longing, touch.
